防晒霜难防晒

  Unle  sun lovers continually rea ly su creen(2), agents(3) in the su creen itself can attack the skin and leave the body susceptible(4) to ultraviolet radiation(5), researchers say.

  Scientists at the University of California at Riverside have found that molecules(6) that block UV radiation in su creen can, over time, penetrate(7) into the skin, leaving the outer body vulnerable.

  Kerry Ha on, a research scientist in the Department of Chemistry at UCR, said that su cree  do an excellent job protecting agai t su urn(8) when used correctly.

  This mea  using a su creen with a high sun protection factor and a lying it uniformly(9) on the skin.

  However, Ha on pointed out that their data showed that if coverage at the skin surface was low, the UV filters(10) in su cree  that had penetrated into the epidermis(11) could potentially do more harm than good.

  U rotected skin exposed(12) to UV radiation generates(13) harmful compounds(14) called reactive oxygen  ecies(15) or ROS. These molecules can react with cells, membranes(16) and DNA, causing skin damage and sig  of aging.

  Ha on's research team found that three UV filters widely used in su cree  generate ROS when skin is exposed to UV radiation. Only a few UV-filters are capable of blocking UV-A, the wavelengths(17) that penetrate deeply into the skin.

  "For now, the best advice is to use su cree  and rea ly them often — the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends every two hours, and e ecially after sweating or swimming, which can wash away su creen — to reduce the amount of UV radiation from getting through to filters that have penetrated the skin," said Christopher Bardeen, an a istant profe or of chemistry at UCR. "This, in turn, would reduce ROS generation."
