A ake sticks out its tongue to collect data for its Jaco on's Organ， an organ strategically located in front of the roof of the ake's mouth that functio as a chemical receptor. Each and every time the ake flicks out its forked tongue， it ares chemical particles in the air， which latch onto， or di olve in， the moisture of the ake's tongue. Once the ake reels in its tongue， it i erts the ti of the forked tongue into the two awaiting openings of the Jaco on's organ where the particles， e ecially those of animal body odors， are identified， analyzed， and acted upon.
For the male ake， the tongue is both a se ory organ， and a se ual organ. The tongue plays a vital role in ake courtship and reproduction， as the male ake's jerking body motio and rapidly flicking tongue either charms the female ake， or renders her unre o ive. In either i tance， by sticking out their tongues， akes e ure the survival of their ecies.
